Letter: Why make ‘big deal’? (July 31, 2009)
Editor:
I see in the July 24 Sentry that Dana Anderson has received a “nice welcome back” to his post as director of parks, recreation and public works. Also a congratulatory letter from long-time civic leader Frank Morong. I have some comments and questions.
Why make such a big deal over the fact that Anderson was not and could not be in a position to embezzle money from the city? I don’t believe he was accused of this. In the minds of many residents he was accused of rather brutal employee relations in the way layoff of personnel in his department was handled.
Some city council members said an apology should be made to Anderson because he was cleared after having been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation of his financial dealings with the city. But what about what seems to be more on the mind of the public – humane human relations within city government? Could it be that an apology is due the six employees of Anderson’s department that were virtually perp-walked out the door without notice?
An investigation of allegations against Anderson in a confidential letter written by Deb Smith is complete, according to City Manager Jim Gailey. It’s interesting he is also reported to have said city council members have not seen the letter.
With regard to Mr. Morong’s letter, I’m sure his evaluation of Anderson’s accomplishments is correct, that Anderson has run his department effectively, and that South Portland has benefited from his actions over the years. But does this make him perfect? Liz Smith has also been a leader in developing her area of responsibility, the South Portland Community Center. What could the problem have been?
