Letter: Safety and more (July 10, 2009)

Two things today...the wonders of Freecyle and summer traffic. Let me start on a positive note. I love Freecycle, and every time I give something away (or receive things), I have a good feeling about humankind. On many occasions, I have met neighbors I did not know (the wonders of Julie Falatko, the Freecycling queen of South Portland – she is fabulous and has been my inspiration) or connected with others whom I would otherwise never meet. This week I gave things to a gentleman in Portland, Leo, only to find out he had adopted two little girls from Ethiopia. Because I work with many refugees and immigrants, I am introducing his family to some of my students by having them over for a picnic sometime later this summer – if summer ever comes.

It is such a great way to share what you have, or find what you need, without adding to the landfill, modifying your carbon footprint, and sharing in social capital – it doesn’t get any better than that. If you have not ever heard of it, look on the South Portland city Web site or search for “freecycle Maine” and join your area groups. You will never toss out anything again!

On a different note – summer traffic. As we head into the summer, traffic is greater and more folks from out of state are visiting.

I am stunned by how few people recall the rule at a four-way stop. Let’s see if you know it. OK, the first person who gets there goes first but who goes next? No, it is not the next person who arrives at the four way  (the common misconception) but rather the person to the right of the first person, no matter when that person entered the intersection. If folks would follow this rule, there would be far less confusion, far less chance of accidents, and more rule-abiding citizens on the road.If you don’t believe me, check your old handy test booklet for your permit, it’s in there!
