I would like to pay a special tribute to Denise Calkins. Among her many contributions to the community, Denise is also a piano instructor in South Portland. She recently held her annual recital for her 30-plus students, many of whom have been under her tutelage for two or more years. The growth her students have shown from one year to the next is truly impressive and a testament to the kind and patient way Denise helps students realize their potential.    

She is a teacher who cares about her students a great deal and because of her patience and dedication, they grow and excel. Seeing her pride in their accomplishments was heartwarming. 

After her final student performed his piece, parents, students and friends rose in a standing ovation. That tribute was as much for Denise as it was for her student. So thank you, Denise, for sharing your gift so that our children are able to share theirs.
