Fifty-year-old South Portland resident Fred Wilson died last Sunday.

“He was dead in his basement,” Maine State Police spokesman Stephen McCausland said on Tuesday. “I’ve been calling it a ‘shooting death.’”

According to a press release from South Portland Police Lt. Todd Bernard, South Portland police arrived at Wilson’s home on Henry Street just before 8 a.m. after receiving a call that someone inside the house was injured.

“He and two friends were inside the house when the shooting occurred, we’ve interviewed everyone involved,” McCausland said. “They’ve all been cooperative.”

An autopsy was performed on Wilson’s body earlier this week, but the Maine Medical Examiner’s Office has not yet released the type of gun that was used or where Wilson was shot, McCausland said. Brandy Pska, a secretary with the medical examiner’s office, could not confirm Wilson’s death was caused by a gunshot.

“I don’t even have that information,” she said. “There is nothing to share at this time.”

McCausland said further developments in the ongoing investigation may occur this week, after the Sentry deadline.

“At the present time, the South Portland Police Department and the Maine State Police Criminal Investigation Division are conducting an investigation into the suspicious circumstances surrounding this death,” Bernard wrote.
