Letter: Thank you for filling the bus (April 10, 2009)

Editor:

On Saturday April 4, Shaw’s in South Portland hosted a food drive for the South Portland Food Cupboard. It turned out to be the most exciting, rewarding, and humbling day. Shaw’s provided listings of the products we routinely stock, and the proceeds from the sale of hot dogs, soda and chips, VIP provided the bus and proceeds from a raffle and the customers filled the bus.

In these economic times, it was so wonderful to see the donations of food pile up. People helped wherever they could; they understood how important this is.

The Food Cupboard has seen a 15 percent increase in need. Every week we see 10 to 12 new families, most are embarrassed to have to ask for food; it is a very humbling experience for them and us. Our volunteer staff treats everyone with kindness and respect. We always have enough food thanks to generous monetary and food donations. We are very grateful to all who join us in this worthy endeavor.

We are a 501(c)3 non-profit located in the basement of St. John the Evangelist Church on Route 1 in South Portland. We are 100 percent volunteer and have been for 12 years.  We operate our cupboard on Thursdays from 8:30 to 11:30 am. We share our food with 50 to 60 families a week. We are very proud of our cupboard and invite interested parties to come see how we operate.  For more information call 874-0379, or email  foodcupboard@maine.rr.com.
