Letter: Dogs on beach non-issue to some (March 27, 2009)
My take on the South Portland dog issue and allowing them on Willard Beach differs from a few of the editorials printed two weeks ago. Long story short, I haven’t been able to walk on Willard Beach in more than 10 years. I have given up. I think that the “dog on the beach” camp over estimates the number of dogs on “voice control” or on leash control. And being an avid walker, I see an awful lot of dog poop. More than just a few “bad apples” as the “dog on the beach” camp claims.
Also, my wife took one of Gary’s forms into work (South Portland variety store) for people to sign. My observation is that for most people it seemed to be a non-issue. But for those for whom it was an issue, I heard all, I repeat, all, stories about how this dog did that to them and how another one came up after her dog/grandchild etc. and how much poop there is where ever you walk. This is a far different story from some views printed last week.
Let’s take this issue to a vote in November...winner takes all...and the losers can’t whine.
