Letter: Shame, regret regarding comment (March 13. 2009)

Editor:

It is with great embarrassment and regret that I write this letter in response to the story last week about Grant Wilder’s monument at Willard Beach.

I made a comment which was interpreted by the reporter as serious and as a serious comment it was very disrespectful. The comment that was reported was that I would vandalize a monument that was in honor of someone who served the community of South Portland for many years. I deeply regret saying anything that would be perceived that way.

I received an email from one of Mr. Wilder’s family members and I was already very embarrassed by my comment in the story, but that letter brought it to an entirely different level of shame. I deeply apologize for any negative feelings it has caused for any of the extended Wilder family and those who knew and respected him. I am also sorry to the members of the Dog Owners Group for any negative impact this might have on our efforts to preserve public access at Willard Beach and to improve responsible dog ownership.

I know other people who I walk my dog with who were taught to swim by Mr. Wilder and they have very fond memories of him. It is with these people that Mr. Wilder’s impact was truly felt and appreciated.

Editor's note: Within the context of the story, we believe the hyperbolic nature of the comment was apparent. The Sentry stands behind the story.
