Letter: Support SoPo park request and maintain space (Jan. 16, 2009)
Editor:
For quite a while now, the Ferry Village Neighborhood Conservation Association (FVNCA) and other concerned South Portland residents have been working hard to preserve the former PROP playground located between Mosher and Pierce streets. Neighbors and those familiar with the playground speak of what a wonderful place it is for the local children, the elderly, and everyone else to have in the neighborhood.
Ultimately, supporters of the playground would like to see the playground become a city-owned public park. PROP has offered to donate all the playground equipment to the city, and the FVNCA hopes the city accepts the donation and leaves it where it is. The FVNCA is also willing to help maintain the park with city support. On Dec. 18, the South Portland Conservation Commission unanimously agreed to submit this letter in support of FVNCA’s efforts for the formation of this park. It would be a shame to miss a great opportunity for both conservation and neighborhood cohesiveness by not voting in favor of the park request.
The conservation commission would also like to thank the FVNCA for their hard work and diligence in bringing this issue forward; especially as such efforts are consistent with the mission and goals of the conservation commission.
