Letter: Armory purchase waste of tax dollars (Printed April 4, 2008)
I recently had the pleasure of reading an article submitted to the “Sentry” by Robert Lord.
I personally believe the purchase of the South Portland Armory was the biggest waste of the citizens tax paid dollars and I honestly think the money could have been used for a much better purpose.
The purchase price was just the tip of the iceberg. Now we have the burden of renovation, which willbe in the millions of dollars and for what? A new town hall in an antiquated building that is going to cost a fortune to heat. Come on South Portland City Council, if you’re going to buy a racehorse you don’t want to choose one that is laying down in the field.
The building is not only an eye sore but is a hazard to anyone who walks within its boundaries what with the corroded concrete falling. If someone got hurt or killed by falling debris they could sue the city and it could cost a whole lot more than it would cost to build a new city hall.
I honestly believe the best thing that could happen to that building is to be torn down and the property sold to a contractor to construct something that the city could collect tax money on instead of spending tax money on. At least then, maybe we could get some of our money back.
