Letter: Special thanks for Lions Club donation (Printed Nov. 9, 2007)
Editor:
For the past few years during November, the South Portland Lions Club
has helped the Food Cupboard by providing us with $25 gift
certificates. We offer South Portland visitors a turkey and all the
fixings from us or the gift certificate to purchase their Thanksgiving
dinner at the Legion Square Market. So many pick the gift certificate
since they can choose the food items they would prefer, as not everyone
likes turkey. Many of our older visitors buy all meat as this is a
luxury they cannot afford.
One of the advantages the Lions and Cupboard feel is that Tom Smaha
owner of Legion Square Market will not let them use the certificates
for cigarettes, beer or wine.
This has been such an great way to ensure a Thanksgiving dinner to
those less fortunate and we are very grateful to the South Portland
Lions Club for their continued generosity. As the numbers of visitors
increase each year, the Lions increase their number of certificates.
This year we received 175 certificates! This amounted to a $4,375
donation! What a gift to the Cupboard and the visitors we serve. We are
very appreciative of the Lions and Lioness continual support throughout
the year.
Thank you once again!
Sybil Riemensnider
Director, South Portland Food Cupboard
