Letter: Breakdown needed for how school funds spent (Printed Oct. 5, 2007)

Editor:

The South Portland School Department wants a $56 million bond for
repairs to the high school. They will not get my vote until I see in
writing how the money will be spent and why.

Why do we need a new cafeteria? A new gym? Turf for the football field? How much is each of these items going to cost?

Let’s see a breakdown of how this money is to be spent and how much of
this money will be spent on things other than repairs, which the school
dept. is known for doing.

I see a wasted entranceway from what little we the taxpayers are being
shown. I will take the tour but I still want a breakdown on where the
money is spent and if the school dept. won’t do that then I recommend
that this bond issue be voted down. We the taxpayers over the years
have had money allotted for school repairs. Yet how many of our schools
have been closed as too costly and not been repaired and when asked
were the money for repairs went never could get an answer.

How many remember when the former superintendent was asked for a line
item budget and would not give it to the council and the council rolled
over. The school controls the council and the city.
