    While Presidential and congressional contenders are
looking toward November 2008, the 2007 municipal election season is
gearing up. Nomination petitions for Cape Elizabeth town council and
school board seats are now available at Town Hall. Petitions in South
Portland will be available beginning Aug. 1.

    According to both Cape Elizabeth and South Portland
municipal charters, nomination forms are due 60 days before the Nov. 6
election or Friday Sept. 8.

    In Cape Elizabeth, two town council seats and three
school board seats will be contested. In the town the candidates
receiving the highest number of votes will be elected.

    The council seats are currently held by Paul
McKenney and Mary Ann Lynch, whose terms expire in December. On the
school board, Patricia Brigham’s and Rebecca Millett’s terms also
expire in December.

    Kevin Sweeney, who was elected to a three-year term
last November has announced he will resign his seat in time for a
replacement to be elected in November.

    In South Portland, the terms of the two at-large
council seats held by Linda Boudreau and Ralph Baxter expire this year.
On the South Portland School Board voters will chose who fills the
District One seat occupied by Richard Carter, the District Two seat
occupied by Steven Onos and an At-Large Seat now held by Burton
Edwards.
