Letter: Coming to SPTV soon (Printed May 18, 2007)

Dear Editor:

It is a great honor to be the instructor for the
Advanced Speaking and Listening and Advanced Reading and Writing class
for English Language Learners at SMCC. My students are young adults who
have met with extraordinary challenges yet show courage, strength of
character and perseverance.

As their final project, they were required to write
and deliver a speech that was about something that was of importance to
them. Both their writing and their presentations were phenomenal!

Thanks to the generosity, skill and cooperation of
Tony Vigue and Moe Amaral of our own SPTV, my students were able to
have their speeches taped and aired on Channel 2. I offer my sincere
gratitude for their commitment to this project. Their interaction with
the students was kind and supportive; none had ever presented a speech
for broadcast, and they were very nervous as well. I urge you to view
them, if at all possible

Yes, they have accents– accents that are part of their beauty,
their difference and their challenge. Be patient– take the time to
really listen. Hear the importance of their words. I guarantee it will
be worth it.

The speeches will air next week on Monday, Wednesday
and Friday at noon and on Friday evening at 7 p.m.. If you cannot watch
it, make the effort to tape it (or contact Tony and Moe and ask them to
air it again!).

I would enjoy hearing your comments. These students are an amazing gift in my life.

Sincerely,

Rosemarie De Angelis

South Portland
