Letter: S. Portland students shined during recent food drive (Printed April 20, 2007)

Editor:

On Saturday, April 7th, the students from
Scarborough, and South Portland Key Clubs, and Builder’s Clubs along
with Scarborough Wentworth Intermediate School, conducted a huge food
drive for the Scarborough and South Portland Food Pantries. Organized
by the Scarborough Kiwanis, the students did the posters, flyers, press
releases and food pick up. They did a tremendous job and we thank them
very much for all their time and efforts. They were professional,
polite and a delight to work with.

Both food pantries have seen an increase in visitors. Scarborough had
50 families last month and South Portland had 180. Within those
families there are over 500 men, women and children that rely on us for
supplemental food. Both pantries are all-volunteer and are always so
very thankful for food drives and monetary donations. Food is expensive
and certain food items are depleted quickly. The students and their
Kiwanis helpers collected food items that we were in great need of and
we are thankful for the attention to our request. We will also share
this food with the Emergency Food Pantry at the SP United Church of
Christ Food Pantry.

It is difficult for many of our visitors to come to
us and ask for help.  For our part, knowing we have helped make
life a bit easier for someone is our greatest gift.  We thank all
the people of Scarborough and South Portland for their support.
