Capers fall flat in first Fix Cup final against Falmouth (Feb. 2, 2007)

For the first period, at least, the Cape Elizabeth
boys hockey team seemed to hold their own against powerhouse Falmouth.
Some big checks, big shots and quick skating, the Capers seemed to give
as much as they got, holding Falmouth to one goal before the first
siren in the contest to see who would be the first team to hold the
Frank Fixaris Memorial Endowment "Fix Cup" aloft on Monday night.
By the middle of the second period, things started
going in Falmouth's favor as they scored one goal. Then another, then
another.
The rout continued into the third as Falmouth scored six more goals– three within a 21 second period.
Cape Elizabeth had high hopes after upsetting Scarborough a week earlier in the tournament's opening round.
Fixaris was a fixture in southern Maine sports
broadcasting community for decades. He began a long stint as a
sportscaster for WGME-TV in 1967, where he worked until 1992, retiring
as the station’s sports director. At the time of his death caused by a
fire in his home in Jan. of 2006, he was the co-host of a sports talk
show on WJAB radio.
In addition to proceeds of ticket sales, a
silent auction was held with 100 percent of the tournament and auction
proceeds going to the endowment that will fund a number of sports and
sports related opportunities at St. Joseph's College in Standish. More
information about the Fixaris Endowment Fund can be found on the St.
Joseph’s website at: www.stcme.edu/fixaris.
