Letter: Cold War Victory Day now a reality (Printed Jan. 12)
Editor:
As the Maine State Director of the Cold War Veterans
Association it gives me great pleasure to announce that on Dec. 7,
Governor Baldacci signed a proclamation declaring May 1st, 2007 as Cold
War Victory Day in Maine, making our Great State the first state in the
nation to provide this honor to our servicemen and servicewomen who
served with honor during the period of Sept. 1945 to Dec. 1991.
As a way to pay homage and honor to our fallen
comrades and those who served during this period of the “Cold War.” We
are attempting to make May 1st a nationally recognized day and also to
ask for Congress to authorize, and Department ff Defense issue, a medal
for all those who served honorably and with grace and dignity. Many
lost their lives in the pursuit of our freedom and have not received
the just recognition so deserved, but as yet not extended.
If you would visit our website www.coldwarveterans.com you will see our
mission and our goals. We ask that you contact your elected officials
and ask them to back and vote for the new bills as they are introduced
into the new legislative sessions this year.
