Letter: Keep parties out of local politics (Printed Nov. 3)
Editor:
We were extremely disappointed and disturbed to read the letter last
week regarding the party affiliations of South Portland City Council
candidates. It exhibited the most blatant, damaging kind of partisan
politics that has no place in this city and its government. To make
such broad, inflammatory generalization about one’s choice of party is
insulting to the candidate; it is absurd to assume that one’s party
affiliation inextricably weds him to the policies and transgressions of
the national party.
Our city and state have a proud record of independent and thoughtful
voting across party lines on many occasions, to the benefit of all. It
is possible, even for lifelong Democrats such as ourselves, to keep an
open mind and vote for the candidates we feel will best serve our city,
and not be slaves to blind partisanship.
We encourage others to do the same.
