Council showed poor leadership on TABOR vote
Editor:
I was surprised when the South Portland City Council did not
overwhelmingly denounce TABOR. I was further surprised when some South
Portland candidates for office encouraged TABOR. South Portland had a
tax cap once. It was a disaster.
Every arm of our local government was handicapped. The children
particularly were injured. The school system was forced to end the best
summer school program in the Portland area. After the cap was removed
it took a long while to restore the summer system and it never was
restored to its previous excellence, or depth.
TABOR is a straight jacket. It will not create wealth. The Christian,
James, asked in his letter, that we take care of the orphans and
widows. TABOR does not do this; in fact, it makes their lives more
difficult. I.e. it is not Christian. TABOR is just another libertarian
something-for-nothing gimmick and if enacted will make life more
difficult. It is passive-aggressive politics of the worst order. If the
citizens of Maine want wealth, not well being, we will simply have to
work for it.
