Letter: Do you know who is getting your vote? (Printed Oct. 27)

Editor:

Jim Soule is a Republican. I just wanted this on the record before the upcoming So. Portland City Council election.

Some have been falsely presenting Jim as a progressive candidate in
hopes to unseat Rosemarie DeAngelis in the District Three race.
Rosemarie DeAngelis is a Democrat. Why does this matter, particularly
for a supposed non-partisan government body?

It matters because one chooses a party affiliation based on how closely
its ideals mesh with their own. They don’t push their ideals aside and
stop being a Republican or Democrat once they get elected. On the City
Council, Democrat Rosemarie DeAngelis believes in and works for the
ideals of the Democratic Party…such as quality education, public
safety, a sustainable economy, cleaner environment and access to open
space, protecting civil rights, and improving the quality of life for
all of our citizens, particularly seniors, those with disabilities, and
children.

To be a Republican today, it is saying that they support and approve of
the dishonest actions of President Bush and VP Dick Cheney, as well as
the many other Republicans involved in scandal after scandal. What once
was a party of principle is now home to those promoting big business
and oil companies, dividing our cultures, destroying our environment,
and burying our future generations in debt.

Currently, both the City Council and the Planning Board are controlled
by Republican majorities. It is up to us, if we really claim to want to
make things better, to change this make-up.

We can start be re-electing Democrat Rosemarie DeAngelis to the City Council on Nov. 7.
