Letter: Bathrooms, yes. Ferris wheel, no (printed Sept. 8)
Editor:
Ordinarily I wouldn’t bother answering an adverse
reply to my “Letter to the Editor”. Each person has a right to his
point of view. But Emily Masterton’s letter (“Charging fees at Fort
Williams is ‘a bad idea,’” Sept. 1, page 9) was an unfair expression of
my intent.
Yes, looking ahead, I do think it would be very
expensive to keep-up Fort Williams in a pristine manner. Incidentally,
what is wrong with nice clean restrooms? I think they’re sanitary.
However, Emily, let’s pass on the concession stands, Ferris wheels,
merry-go rounds and marching bands. Although I think I might enjoy a
marching band - good old Sousa.
I would be up in arms if anyone would suggest
concession stands and I believe most people in Cape Elizabeth would be
too. I think Fort Williams is an extraordinary park. I previously
stated why.
I apologize for the sarcasm, but the subject is
serious and deserves serious examination. Yes, it has been brought up
many times, which proves that it is an unsolved problem needing a
responsible solution.
Now, Emily, let’s be honest. I don’t believe
that 25 or 30 people represent the feelings of all the people in Cape
Elizabeth - the amount of people who attended the town meeting you were
at.
In any case, give the people in Cape Elizabeth a
chance to express their opinion by a vote– a good way to express
passionate feelings. I would find that very interesting.
All the best Emily. Good luck to all of us.
